A total lunar eclipse will take place overnight from Sunday (Sept. 7) into the early hours of Monday (Sept. 8), creating a stunning red “blood moon” visible to millions across Asia, Western Australia, and Europe.
The September blood moon total lunar eclipse will reach maximum phase at 5:11 p.m. EDT (21:11 GMT) on Sept. 7, when the moon is fully immersed in Earth’s umbral shadow.
Totality, the period when the moon is completely covered, will last about 82 minutes. According to Time and Date, here are totality times across different locations:
- London (BST): 7:30 p.m. – 7:52 p.m. (Sept. 7)

Nearly 77% of the world’s population will be able to witness this blood moon total lunar eclipse.
For those who cannot view it directly, several free livestreams will cover the event, including Space.com’s own broadcast, allowing skywatchers worldwide to enjoy the celestial spectacle.
What Happens During the Eclipse
The eclipse begins as the moon enters Earth’s penumbral shadow, creating a subtle shading effect. As it moves deeper into the umbra, a darker shadow spreads across the lunar surface. During totality, the moon glows a reddish-orange hue, its exact shade shaped by Earth’s atmospheric conditions.
This blood moon total lunar eclipse occurs just 2.7 days before the moon reaches perigee, its closest point to Earth. As a result, the moon will appear slightly larger in the night sky. Since the eclipse takes place deep within Earth’s umbra, observers can expect a rich, dark red lunar disk.
For viewers in Asia and Australia, the blood moon will be high in the sky during totality, perfect for observation and photography. In Europe and Africa, the eclipse aligns with moonrise, offering dramatic views near the horizon. Sadly, the Americas will miss this event entirely.
